The Mud Test Kit brings together the three basic checks of mud properties: specific gravity, viscosity and sand content. It is packed in an artificial leather or aluminium alloy case, so the complete set is easy to carry between the well site and the laboratory.

The NB-1 mud hydrometer measures the specific gravity of mud in g/cm³, with a scale division of 0.01 g/cm³ and a 140 cm³ test cup. The mud viscometer expresses viscosity as the time, in seconds, that a fixed volume of mud takes to flow out of the funnel; its outflow pipe is 5 mm in diameter and 100 mm long, and the measuring cup holds 500 ml at one end and 200 ml at the other.

The NA-1 sand content meter determines sand content from the change in mud volume after filtering through its screen, expressed as a percentage. It consists of a filter cartridge with a 200-mesh screen, a funnel matched to the cartridge diameter and a glass measuring tube graduated 0–100 %.
