Delta-T WS-GP2 Automatic Weather Station

The WS-GP2 from Delta-T Devices is a complete automatic weather station that measures wind speed and direction, air temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation, rainfall and soil temperature. It is built around the GP2 data logger, a powerful core that makes the system flexible and expandable for demanding research and environmental monitoring at remote and exposed sites. The sensors are mounted on a 2 m high, 48 mm diameter anodised aluminium mast with a 1 m cross arm, a levelling mount for the solar sensor, steel guy wires, stakes and a logger canopy that shields the GP2 from the sun.

The station is supplied with the AN-WD2-03 combined wind speed and direction sensor, the RHT-SDI-12-T6 relative humidity and air temperature sensor in a radiation shield, the ES2-05 solar energy sensor, the RG2+BP-06 tipping-bucket rain gauge and the ST1-05 soil temperature probe. Delta-T installed stations come with the WS-GP2 weather station program pre-installed in DeltaLINK, where recording rates and calculated results can be chosen separately for each sensor, including wind rose, class rose, vector average and maximum wind gust. Data are collected to a PC over the GP2-USB cable or remotely with cellular modem options, and can be exported as CSV for Excel.

The station uses 2 SDI-12 measurements, 3 analogue and 2 counter channels, leaving 9 analogue channels, 2 counter channels and about 60 SDI-12 inputs free for further sensors such as soil moisture, barometric pressure, PAR, UV, albedo, total and diffuse radiation, soil EC, net radiation and evaporation. The GP2 offers 12 differential (or 24 single-ended) analogue inputs, 4 digital inputs, up to 62 SDI-12 sensors, 2 relay outputs expandable to 6 (1 A), USB, RS232, Ethernet or modem communication, external power of 10–15 V DC and a size of 225 × 185 × 75 mm; GP2 loggers supplied before March 2016 gain SDI-12 support through a software update. With DeltaLINK 3.7 and later the station calculates reference evapotranspiration (ETo) with the full ASCE/FAO-56 Penman-Monteith equation from air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and solar radiation, recorded as hourly and daily values to guide irrigation; the GP2's advanced features also serve degree days, disease prediction, wind chill, dew point and PID control.
