The MaxiFlo MU-HA is a handheld transit-time ultrasonic flow meter with clamp-on sensors for pipes from 15 to 6000 mm. It measures clean liquids at -16 to +16 m/s with ±1.0% of reading accuracy, without cutting the pipe or stopping the flow, and stores data on a built-in logger.
The MaxiFlo MU-HA is the handheld converter of the MU series of ultrasonic flow meters from Seil Enterprise Co. It uses transit-time (time-difference) technology: two ultrasonic pulses are sent through the liquid, one in the flow direction and one against it, and the difference between their transit times gives the average flow velocity, from which the volume flow is calculated.
The clamp-on sensors are mounted on the outside of the pipe and are fitted with magnets for easy installation, so the measurement is non-invasive: there is no need to cut the pipe or interrupt the flow, there is no contact with the medium and no pressure drop. With three sensor sizes the meter covers pipes from 15 mm to 6000 mm made of steel, stainless steel, cast iron, plastics, concrete or any material with a known sound velocity, carrying water, sea water and other clean liquids.
A little bigger than a PDA and operated with one hand, the MU-HA is intended for plant surveys, as a check meter for verifying mechanical meters, and for measurements at locations that are not currently metered. The built-in data logger records the process history, which can be downloaded to a PC or laptop and opened in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet.
