The Benetech GM605 is a wood moisture tester of the DC-resistance (probe) type. Its two built-in probes are inserted into the material and the moisture content is shown directly in percent on a large LCD. The manufacturer describes it as widely applicable for testing the moisture content of wood, bamboo ware, paper articles and traditional Chinese medicinal materials of wood-fibre construction.

The M key selects one of 4 wood types or one of 4 other materials (A karstenite, B cement mortar, C lime mortar, D brick). The manual includes a reference table that assigns common timbers to the four wood types, for example Rhodesia teak and Brazil walnut (type 1), walnut and teak (type 2), oak, maple, elm and fir (type 3), and birch, spruce, larch and basswood (type 4). When a timber is not listed, the manufacturer recommends measuring on type 2.

The instrument calibrates itself automatically after power-on, locks the reading with the HOLD key and recalls the maximum or minimum reading with the SET key. It is a compact handheld unit measuring 135.6 × 55 × 29.4 mm and weighing 107.7 g without batteries, with a built-in protective cover for the probes.
