The SK-970A is a handheld moisture meter for compost made by SATO KEIRYOKI MFG. CO., LTD. (SK SATO). It measures the electric resistance between the electrodes on its probe and displays a value that represents the moisture content, from 23.0 to 80.0% in the standard range with a resolution of 0.1%. Measurement is simple: apply the electrodes of the 800 mm probe to the part of the compost you wish to measure and press the START key.

The meter has a temperature compensation function, so the measured value needs no temperature correction within 5 to 40°C. It offers eight editable ranges: one standard range (RANGE1) and seven users' ranges (RANGE2 to RANGE8). In each range the equilibrium (parallel shift) and the angle of the relation function can be set individually, so the displayed value can be matched to known moisture contents of a particular compost. Repeated measurements of the same sample can be averaged with the AVE/OFF key.

The displayed reading is not an absolute value; it is relative to electric conductance. If the compost contains a high concentration of highly conductive substances such as salt or metals, the reading will be higher than the actual moisture content. When such substances are in small quantities and evenly distributed, the meter is useful for comparative examinations after proper setting. Powdered or granular objects cannot be measured. If there is a temperature difference between the compost and the SK-970A main unit, measurement errors will occur, so keep the sensor inserted in the compost for at least 30 seconds before measuring.
