TFA Dostmann 30.5506 Moisture Meter for Wood and Building Materials

The TFA Dostmann 30.5506 measures the moisture content of wood – including firewood, timber, paper and cardboard – and of soft building materials such as mortar, concrete and plaster. It is a robust, handy instrument for on-site inspection on the construction site or in new buildings.

Operation is simple: remove the protective cap and press the two measuring probes into the material. The LCD shows the result as a bar graph on two scales – 6 to 44 % for wood and 0.2 to 2.0 % for building materials – together with the ambient temperature in °C or °F.

Checking firewood before it goes into the fireplace is especially important: wood with more than 20 % water content gives a lower calorific value and produces smoke, tar and soot. As a guide, the manufacturer rates wood, cardboard and paper as dry below 14 %, normal at 14–20 % and wet above 20 %, and building materials as dry below 0.4 %, normal at 0.4–1.1 % and wet above 1.1 %.
