The PR2/6 Profile Probe from Delta-T Devices measures volumetric soil moisture content at six depths – 10, 20, 30, 40, 60 and 100 cm – from a single access tube. It is a sealed 25.4 mm polycarbonate rod carrying pairs of stainless steel sensing rings. Each pair is driven by a 100 MHz signal whose electromagnetic field extends about 100 mm into the surrounding soil; the soil's permittivity, dominated by its water content, produces a stable analog voltage output for every depth.
The probe serves two purposes: move it from access tube to access tube and read each site in seconds with the HH2 Moisture Meter, or leave it installed on a GP2 or DL6 data logger to follow how soil moisture changes over time. Generalised calibrations for mineral and organic soils are supplied, and a soil-specific calibration can be carried out when higher accuracy is required.
Its patented sensing technology keeps sensitivity to salinity and temperature low, so it reports soil moisture content – not just trends – across a range of soil types, including saline conditions. Access tubes need an installation hole only 27 mm in diameter, which keeps soil disturbance to a minimum.
